It’s not always easy deciding what to wear for a photoshoot, so I’ve put together some guidelines to help you look your best, be comfortable and get some great looking photographs!
Colour
Neutral colours are a great choice! By neutral, I’m not meaning they have to be dull and boring, but try to stay away from anything too striking as they distract - think softer, neutral, earthy, metallic tones. These are guaranteed to look great in almost any outdoor setting.
You can either wear colours that compliment your natural environment or contrast it. If you wear a copper toned dress in a green forest setting, it will look amazing, or you could choose soft blues, creams and tans at a beach setting which will look equally as good but have a totally different feel. It really depends on the look you’re after.
For family photographs, I would suggest wearing no more than four colours between your family members.
Texture & Movement
Select fabrics that give some movement and flow with the breeze, or filter the afternoon sun and give a golden glow. Cosy textures are always a good choice too. Natural fibres such as wool, linen and cotton are great options.
Season & Location
Be sure to consider the season and location of your photo shoot. Make sure what you’re wearing suits your location of choice and that you will be warm or cool enough and comfortable. Layering up with a cute woollen jumper, a scarf, a hat, headband or jacket can be a great way to make your photos more visually interesting. Other than summer, layering works well across a range of seasons.
Logos and Patterns
The general rule with logos is to avoid them as they are distracting in photographs and we want to keep the focus on your face. Keep Patterns to a minimum and if you do decide to wear a pattern, keep it small and subtle Small patterns can look great on mums or young girls.
Complimentary, Not Matching!
When too many people wear the same colours in a photo shoot, they can sometimes blend together and you end up getting a bit lost. The idea is to compliment each other without necessarily having to wear the same colour clothing. Mix it up a bit with different fabrics, textures, tones and accessories.
Accessories, Shoes, Make-up & Hair
Accessories can be great to add a bit of your own personality to your photos, but be careful not to over do it, remember, we want the focus to remain on your face. Throw in a hat or a scarf if you feel you might like to add these to your outfit for some of the photos. Remember, you don’t have to wear the same thing for all the photos. If the allows, you can switch things up - throw on a hat, or even change your outfit completely!
Make sure your shoes are appropriate for the location and season and most importantly, make sure you’re comfortable in them, your photoshoot will probably involve some walking and maybe even jumping if it suits your shoot.
When it comes to make-up, it’s really up to you. I want you to look like you. A natural look always works well, but this one’s totally up to you and what makes you feel beautiful and confident.
Nails - please either treat yourself to a fresh manicure, or have natural nails. Chipped nail polish is distracting and looks untidy in photographs. While we’re on the subject of nails, have a quick check the night before to make sure your nails are clean incase they end up in close up shots.

Personality
Probably the most important thing to remember when planning for your photo shoot is to be you! We want your personality to shine through in the photographs. You may be tempted to buy a new dress or top, but sometimes it’s those items of clothing we already own that show ‘you’ the best. Make sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing. I want your photos to be unique and special to you.
